In April 2007 I was introduced to kiteboarding at the North American Buggy Expo held in the Mojave Desert. The
terrain was a dry lake bed right on the Nevada/California border called Ivanpah. I was invited to photograph for the
mountain boarding company Ground Industries .
Matt McClain, Matt Barker and Jeff Haughton are the creators of the
industry leading company. It was at this event that pro riders,
enthusiasts and other industry related companies from
around the world came to test the desert winds. Riders of mountain
boards and buggies use large kites to propel themselves across the
desert. Buggy speeds range from 25mph to 40mph and sometimes exceeding
50mph.
Kite Boarders(mountain boards) on the other hand use the wind to take
off vertically from the ground performing tricks (a various range of
flips and grabs). The picture below is of Ozone kite's unofficial mascot Marley and is the front page of the Ground Industries website. Click on the photo to see photo pages
full of the action from Ivanpah. Be sure to check out all the links related to this and learn more about this sport
